Fall P.S.
Fall
This is the part of Fall the is truly magical. It's beautiful today. Yes, a little windy, but stunning blue skies and that certain type of light that only happens this time of year.
I do love Fall. Well, not all of Fall, but this part for sure. Remind me of this in November, ok?

Runner's high
My runs this week have been unbelievable. I have had a week of runner's high and it's a beautiful thing. I did a 9 mile tempo run on Thursday that was so fantastic that I came home and told my husband that if I could bottle that run and promise it to anyone who ever tried the sport, the world would be full of runners.
Sunday was a 19 miler, as I continue to build for my marathon. That went well too, especially when compared to last week's long run which I basically dragged my ass through. Funny how things can change so quickly.
This weekend was full of those beautiful fall skies and a crispness in the air. You can hardly get over the beauty and freshness of it all.

Yes...more whales
Sorry, but it's my job and when I'm busy doing my job I don't have much time for training so you all are sort of stuck with whale pics.
The second half of August was spent closer to home, but still on the water. I embarked on a tagging adventure. It sounds mad, but I actually attach tags to whales using a crossbow and a suction cup. What? Suction cups aren't meant to be rocketed through the air in a streamline fashion? Well crap. Now I know why it's so damn hard to get those suckers to fly.
It is a long, frustrating process but every once in a while you get lucky. Once attached the tag sends signals back to the boat about how deep the whale is diving. Skookum.
This trip was wrought with difficulties and mishaps and I would prefer not to relive them, so I will share some happy photos.
Well...you do now!
Just for fun....
Sadly, the field season is winding down. The days are already getting shorter and colder and whale sightings are fewer and farther between. If only I could take a page from their book and head down to Hawaii until next summer.
More soon.

Working for a living
August was busy. Really, really busy. It is typically the busiest month of the year for me. And this year was no exception.
First stop: The Shumagin Islands....a group of islands a couple hundred miles west of Kodiak. My first foray into whale research began in the Shumagin Islands about 8 years ago, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. The town of Sand Point is at the heart of the Shumagins. It's a town of about 800 that knows nothing but fishing. Typical Alaskan bush lifestyle.
So, I was out there for about a week and was not disappointed. Fin and humpback whales en mass. Nice. Good times and old "friends."
Of course, the weather was shit most of the time and we got our teeth kicked in on most days, but that doesn't really matter when you get at least one day like this.
Around the start of this trip, I also started training for my fall marathon in earnest. It's always a bit tedious logging long miles when there is a total of 6 miles of road in the entire town. The Alaskan bush....gotta love it!
More to come soon.
